About Chambers

Our Profile

42 Bedford Row is a leading common law set of chambers with 8 silks and 58 juniors who focus on specialist practice areas within Civil and Family Law.

18 barristers in chambers are listed as leaders in their fields in Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500. Past members include Rose LJ, Janet Smith LJ, Leveson LJ, David Clarke J and Caroline Swift J.

Members of chambers have a reputation for being effective advocates who are unpretentious and easy to work with.  Chambers is described as having “acquired a huge following among solicitors and local authorities”, a situation which is “due in no little part to the approachable and hard-working clerks on hand here”.

The members of 42 Bedford Row are organised into specialist practice areas who share expertise and organise seminars and discussion groups.  The practice groups are:

Accreditations

We are committed to providing additional services for our legal partners. As Law Society Accredited External Course providers, we can offer CPD hours for attendance at our seminars. Our program of Continuing Professional Development includes:-

  • Chambers run Seminars
  • Shorter Seminars aimed at specific interest groups
  • Providing Speakers for in-house courses
  • Tailor-made presentations for specific requirements
  • Informal talks on recent developments in the law and practice

Members of Chambers provide these services both in Chambers and at Solicitor's Offices and for External Conferences. If you would like us to provide any of the above, or would just like to be added to our delegate list for a specific area of law, please speak to the Senior Clerk.

Fees

Our Clerks are always happy to discuss fee estimates, and the basis on which they will be charged.  We welcome instructions on a conditional fee basis.  The clerks can provide a copy of a draft agreement.

We would normally expect privately funded fees to be settled within fourteen days of the work being done. There are many instances however, where we appreciate that this is impractical, and we will try to accommodate any reasonable request made to us in this respect.

Client Care

Our client’s views and comments are extremely important to us. Feedback that you provide us with is essential for our forward planning to provide the best service that we can for our clients. Complaints are taken very seriously, and if there is any aspect of our service with which you are discontent, please tell us. It may well be that you merely wish to air a minor irritation, in which case your comments will be noted. However, if your complaint is of a more serious nature, we have a well defined procedure whereby your grievance is investigated and the findings reported to you. All such complaints should be directed to the Senior Clerk, unless the complaint concerns the Senior Clerk, in which case the complaint should be directed to Miss Anna McKenna.

All client feedback is regularly reviewed in order for us to identify the areas in which we excel, and areas that require improvement.
