Summary

Scott’s main areas of practice are clinical negligence, personal injury and professional negligence. He acts for both claimants and defendants and his practice is fairly evenly split between the two. More than half of Scott’s claimant work is undertaken on CFAs.

Scott regularly appears before Coroners in inquests throughout England and Wales. He has, over the last five years or so, developed a particular specialism in deaths occurring whilst in State care (mainly prisons and hospitals). Scott represented the custody officers in the inquest into the death of Gareth Myatt in 2007.

Scott is regularly instructed by local authorities, particularly in relation to education law, occupier's liability, the law relating to highways and employer's liability.

Scott is a qualified commercial mediator (2004), an advocacy trainer for the Inner Temple (2005), a member of the Inner Temple Advocacy Committee (2007) and recently qualified as an advocacy teacher-trainer (2009).

Young v. Kent County Council, 16 November 2009

The Claimant sustained severe brain damage after falling through a skylight in 2001.  Judgment for 50% of his damages was awarded in 2005. On 16 November 2009, damages on a full liability basis were agreed in the sum of £1.86M.  Sir Christopher Holland approved the settlement figure of £930,000.  Charles Utley and Scott Matthewson appeared for the claimant, instructed by Hodge Jones & Allen LLP.
