Introduction

Charles was called to the Bar in July 1980 and after completing pupillage became a founding barrister member of 169, Temple Chambers in February 1982 where he successfully built an exclusively civil practice as a barrister before moving to 13 Kings Bench Walk in September 2011 and 42 Bedford Row in May 2014. Charles has also worked with the Inns of Court School of Law conducting practical exercises classes and examination marking for Bar Vocational Course students. Charles also has a screen career as a participant in model advocacy videos filmed by the Inns of Court School of Law and City University Law School. Charles is a former editorial contributor to Current Law and a current editorial contributor to Blackstones Civil Practice as well as a contributor to the Bar Professional Training Course Advocacy Manual. Charles is also a member of the panel of legally qualified chairs for appeals conducted by the British Equestrian Federation. Charles has worked with leading counsel on a number of occasions. Charles sees his role as that of a problem solver instructed to achieve the best outcome for his lay and professional clients in the light of the law as it is and as it should be.

Charles is experienced in a broad range of civil work and his principal practice areas which often overlap with each other. His principal practice areas are:

Commercial work

Company and commercial contract and tort disputes, insurance disputes, partnership disputes and insolvency disputes in the High Court and the County Court. Charles experience in these areas encompasses interim remedies and freezing injunctions.

Property work

Freehold and leasehold property disputes involving contracts for the sale of land, leases and tenancy agreements, wills and trusts and relating to title, boundaries, possession, securities and easements and covenants.

Personal injury work

Claimant and defendant work in personal injury and Fatal Accident Act claims in the fields of employer’s liability, product liability, public liability and road traffic accidents and travel liability. Charles’ experience encompasses a number of catastrophic injury claims with damages in excess of £1 million. Charles’ experience also encompasses defending prosecutions under the Health & Safety at Work Act and associated health and safety regulations.

Charles also has experience in dealing with professional negligence claims related to the areas in which he works and has worked with leading counsel on a number of occasions.
