Probationary Tenancy

Probationary tenancy, commonly known as third six pupillage, is offered to those who have completed pupillage at another set of Chambers but were not offered tenancy. Prospective applicants should note that, as per section C1 of the Bar Qualification Manual, third six pupillages, or probationary tenancies, do not form part of the regulated period of pupillage and are not overseen by the Bar Standards Board.

Current Vacancy - deadline 9 August 2024

42BR is actively inviting applications for a probationary tenancy of 6 months in our Family Group, commencing in Autumn 2024.

Our highly regarded and directory listed Family Law Group covers each of the main areas of work: children public and private law, including care proceedings and adoption, as well as matrimonial finance, including ToLATA, and Inheritance Act work.

The successful applicant must have the relevant experience, an understanding of the marketplace, a minimum of a 2.1 degree (not necessarily in law), and a clear strategy for growing and developing their own practice and career.

Probationary tenants will be fully supervised and assessed, with a definite view to full tenancy after six months.  Our probationary tenants will develop a significant caseload of their own, and can expect to be going to court on their own cases regularly.

There is no earnings guarantee as a probationary tenant, but you can expect to earn at least £25k in your six-month period.

How to apply

Please send a full CV, covering letter and any references that you would like us to consider including from solicitors and/or from current or former pupil supervisors to our Chambers Director, Vincent Denham, ([email protected]) by not later than Friday 9 August 2024.

Your covering letter should explain why you think 42BR would be a good fit for you; please telephone Vincent Denham for a confidential discussion on 020 7831 0222 before applying if that would be helpful.

We anticipate interviews taking place immediately after the closing date.
