Matthew joined 42BR following the successful completion of his pupillage in October 2024. He is developing a broad practice across chambers’ main areas of expertise.
Prior to pupillage, Matthew was part of the automated vehicles project at the Law Commission of England and Wales, whose report recommended new legislation for the safe introduction of self-driving cars.
Matthew has also amassed a wide range of litigation experience, providing support to the New Zealand Government’s counsel and advising on potential breaches of children’s rights at Barnardos.
Matthew regularly advises and represents both claimants and respondents in a variety of personal injury matters, including claims arising from road traffic accidents and claims involving infants.
Matthew accepts instructions on the basis of conditional fee agreements where appropriate.
Matthew regularly represents landlords (private and social) and tenants from the initial drafting of pleadings to representation at a broad range of proceedings, including possession, disrepair and anti-social behaviour injunctions.
Matthew also regularly advises parties on liability and quantum in disrepair cases.
Matthew accepts instructions across the full spectrum of family law, including public children law, private children law and financial remedies. He also regularly appears in applications for protective orders under the Family Law Act.
Matthew has a particular interest in public children law, having produced a written report on family justice system reforms in New Zealand to present child-focused recommendations to an Independent Panel in Parliament.
Matthew has represented both individuals and companies in a variety of commercial and contractual disputes. This applies to both business-to-business and business-to-consumer disputes.
Matthew has experience in this area, having worked for specialist civil litigation firm in New Zealand on a class action for 150 homeowners against a manufacturer who sold defective cladding in the 1980/1990s.
Matthew is developing his employment law practice. He acts for employees and employers across all areas of employment law. He has experience working with a range of clients, from inexperienced claimants to larger corporate bodies.
