Welcome back, Joy!

Joy has developed a robust family law practice, in both private and public family law, representing clients across a spectrum of complex issues with professionalism and diligence.
Joy began her practice with a broad mixed common law practice which saw her working across a number of practice areas. This included a busy criminal and civil practice. Joy has found that her foundation in criminal law provided her with unparalleled advocacy experience, which has been of huge benefit to her family law practice, particularly in fact finding and final hearings. Additionally, Joy’s extensive knowledge of civil procedure has been transferrable to her family practice, where she is able to tactically utilise the Family Procedure Rules to her clients’ advantage.
Joy’s practice draws on significant prior experience. Prior to coming to the Bar, Joy spent two years in the litigation department of the Home Office, assisting in the defence of judicial review claims made against UKVI’s rules, policies and procedures. Joy also spent time as an Assistant Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Sir Oliver Heald QC, then Minister of State for Courts and Justice. Joy was responsible for overseeing the minister’s portfolio in various areas, including the MOJ’s Brexit negotiation strategy, EU Law, Human Rights, the Bill of Rights Project, Crown Dependencies, problem solving and specialist courts, and the work of the Law Commission.
Joy accepts instructions across the full ambit of family law. Joy regularly acts in proceedings concerning public and private children, financial remedies, family committal and applications for protective orders under the Family Law Act 1996.
Joy has extensive experience in cases involving child arrangements. Joy is regularly instructed in cases concerning complex and serious issues of parental alienation, domestic abuse, appointment of a rule 16.4 Guardian and internal and external relocation. Joy is often commended by clients and members of the judiciary for her rigorous case analysis, sensitive client handling and persuasive advocacy.
