42BR Barristers' Internship Project

42BR Barristers' Internship Project

At 42BR Barristers, we are pleased to see modern English society being built on the idea of equality, and the changes currently being made to facilitate access to the Bar, though we acknowledge not all equality is the same. There are two types: one that limits and diminishes, and another that uplifts and empowers. The latter is the heart of English law, which is all about ensuring that everyone has access to different opportunities.

When the 42BR Internship project was created, it was built on the values of equality and opportunity. Our aim was to make sure everyone has a fair chance and equal opportunity.

The Internship policy removes the requirement for references, making it easier for applicants from diverse, non-traditional backgrounds to apply. Recognising that financial barriers exist, the program also offers funding of up to £2,500. The internship emphasises practical legal learning, including advocacy exercises where interns get to creatively argue a mock case, usually against a pupil in Chambers.

Additional resources, like an optional reading list and CV/interview feedback, help interns along the way. Interns are also encouraged to explore historic debates outside of law, such as the famous 1948 BBC debate between philosopher Bertrand Russell and Jesuit priest Frederick Copleston. This debate showcases brilliant oral argument, intellectual respect, and clarity—qualities to emulate in legal practice. The current reading list also includes a fantastic 5 minute BBC interview with Lord Sumption, which is a great resource for anyone looking to improve their own argument skills. It features articles involving the thoughts and experiences of eminent judges and practitioners, both past and present, such as Mark Littman QC, Lord David Pannick KC, Lady Simler and Lady Justice Andrews.

While it is unrealistic to presume we can turn someone into an exceptional practitioner in just one week, the 42BR Internship aims to inspire by providing equal opportunities. Several internships have been offered through the 10,000 Black Interns project, and those who’ve completed the internship, including the challenging advocacy exercises, have found it valuable—one intern even described the experience as “excellent.” Another wrote to thank Arfan for the “excellent example he set” during her internship in Chambers. While the project is especially beneficial for those seeking pupillage after completing their studies, we are proud to say it is open to all.

If you're interested in applying, send an email to [email protected], Chair of the Internship Committee, in April, with the internship starting in July. The email may be accompanied with a CV and cover letter. The CV does not need to include referees.
