The Renters’ Rights Bill and the Future of Rent Repayment Orders

On Thursday 13 March 2025, 42BR's Mathew McDermott hosted an insightful discussion on the Renters' Rights Bill and the Future of Rent Repayment Orders.

The Renters' Rights Bill is rapidly progressing through Parliament and could become law as soon as this Spring. It is a flagship piece of legislation for the Labour government and will bring about important changes across the residential landlord and tenant landscape.

This includes changes to the meaning, breadth and scope of rent repayment orders awarded against landlords by the First-tier Tribunal (Property Chamber), the use of which has risen considerably since changes were brought about in the Housing and Planning Act 2016.

To coincide with the publishing of his book on Rent Repayment Orders, Mathew McDermott discussed what changes the Bill is likely to introduce, whether it will be easier for tenants to obtain a rent repayment order, what impact the changes in the Bill will have on landlords and who else needs to be concerned...
