Max joined 42BR following the successful completion of his pupillage in October 2023. He is developing a broad practice across all of chambers’ main areas of expertise, with a particular interest in family law and employment law.
Max read Law at the University of Cambridge and completed the BPTC at City, University of London, before being called to the Bar in 2021. During his studies, Max volunteered at Advocate and Liberty and represented clients in the First-tier Tribunal with the Free Representation Unit. After graduating, he amassed a broad range of litigation experience, working for a leading international law firm and two boutique litigation specialists.
Outside work, Max enjoys watching and playing sport. He is particularly keen on rugby, having been awarded a Cambridge Blue for competing in the 2014 and 2015 Varsity Matches. These days, he finds he is less injury prone watching from the sidelines.
Family Law
Max accepts instructions across the full spectrum of family law, including public children law, private children law and financial remedies. He also regularly appears in applications for protective orders under the Family Law Act. Recent matters include:
- Successfully obtaining all findings sought in a four day Fact Finding Hearing in a private children matter
- Obtaining a favourable contact order in an international custody dispute
- Securing final Non-Molestation Orders and Occupation Orders for vulnerable clients
- Acting for a Local Authority in the High Court and successfully obtaining an order under the Court’s inherent jurisdiction
Employment Law
Max acts for employees and employers across all areas of employment law, with particular expertise in claims under the Equality Act. Max regularly advises on each step of the litigation, including the merits of settlement. He also has experience drafting pleadings and case management documents in preparation for preliminary hearings.
Recent matters include:
- Full conduct of a matter representing a large employer in a claim for unfair dismissal and indirect discrimination
- Representing a Claimant in a claim for direct discrimination and whistleblowing against a major airline
- Successfully resisting an application for reconsideration on behalf of the Respondent following strike out of a claim for discrimination
Business & Property Law
Max has represented, advised and drafted pleadings for both Claimants and Defendants in a wide variety of general contractual disputes. This applies to both business-to-business and business-to-consumer disputes. Max has extensive experience in this area, having worked for leading boutique commercial litigation firms, CANDEY and Signature Litigation, prior to coming to the Bar.
Recent matters include:
- Successfully representing the Claimant at trial in a claim for unjust enrichment against a former business partner
- Advising a major shipping company on the merits of a claim against a bank in relation to APP fraud
- Advising and representing a Claimant property management company in relation to a lease renewal dispute
Housing Law
Max regularly represents tenants and landlords in all aspects of housing law, including possession, disrepair, homelessness, statutory nuisance and anti-social behaviour injunctions. Max is particularly adept at dealing with Equality Act issues that arise in housing cases as he is regularly exposed to these issues in both his housing and employment practice. Max also regularly advises parties on liability and quantum in disrepair cases.
