Sam is a specialist employment and property/probate barrister. Called in 1999, he has been on the GLD panel (previously Treasury Counsel) since 2007 and is recommended for employment work in the Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners. Prior to joining 42BR, Sam was a tenant for 25 years at Dere Street Barristers, York. He still lives in North Yorkshire but works all over the UK. Sam was appointed as a Deputy District Judge in 2015.
Sam’s employment practice encompasses the full range of employment law. He is typically involved in cases involving discrimination, whistleblowing or TUPE and frequently appears against leading counsel. He has appeared in a number of appeals at the EAT and beyond.
Sam specialises in residential property disputes (Boundaries, rights of way and other easements, freehold restrictive covenants, nuisance, proprietary estoppel and disputes arising out of the sale of property). Having acted in the original First Tier Tribunal hearing, he recently appeared in the Supreme Court in Ridley v. Brown [2025] UKSC 7, now the leading authority on the law of adverse possession of registered land.
Sam also practises in wills and probate, typically in disputes as to the validity of wills or their meaning, administration disputes and claims under the Inheritance Act 1975.
Sam continues to practise in personal injury litigation, as he has done all his professional life. In recent years, his work has mainly been in the fields of industrial disease and unusual occupier/employer claims. He is regularly instructed on behalf of the Government in claims for NIHL brought by ex-miners. He has in the last few years acted for claimants in a number of catastrophic injury or fatal accident cases, alongside leading counsel, securing settlements of up to £4.5million.
Sam is authorised to accept instructions direct from members of the public. He encourages clients who are considering this route to contact Chambers and discuss their problem.
